Why do you want to be an MSYP?

I live in a rural area, and sometimes it feels like young people who live further away from bigger towns and cities get forgotten. Transport is a big issue for me. If you can’t drive and there aren’t good buses, it can be hard to meet friends, get to activities, have a part-time job or access services. I want to become an MSYP so young people in rural communities can have a stronger voice. I’d like to raise issues about transport, activities and opportunities, but I also want to hear what other young people think the priorities should be. I haven’t done anything like this before, which is partly why I’m standing. I think politics and decision-making should include ordinary young people, not just people who already know how everything works.

Why should someone vote for you?

Vote for me if you want someone who is willing to learn.I don’t have loads of experience giving speeches or being part of committees. But I know what it is like to be a young person here, and I’m prepared to work hard.I’m quite practical. If you tell me something isn’t working, I want to find out why, who has the power to change it and what we can do about it.I’ll also be honest. I won’t promise that I can change things that an MSYP doesn’t have the power to change. What I can promise is that I’ll listen, ask questions, speak up and make sure young people know what is happening.

Pick the top three issues you want to campaign on as an MSYP

Transportation, Youth Work, ‘Other’, (Other: Issues young people face in rural areas )

How will you consult the young people in your area or organisation to ensure they are represented well and their voices are heard?

Because young people in my area are spread out, I would use both online and face-to-face consultation. I’d create simple online polls where young people could quickly tell me what they think. I would also ask schools, youth clubs and community groups if I could visit and speak directly to young people. I’d like to set up a small group of young people from different parts of the area who I could check in with regularly. I know I won’t be able to speak to everyone, so I would keep looking at who I haven’t heard from. For example, I’d want to make sure younger teenagers and young people living in smaller communities were included too.
